The Pen

The office reception resembled a mini lounge, teeming with people as the walk-in interviews continued in full swing.

Stepping out for lunch, our eyes met, tentative and vulnerable, she continued to stare.

‘Can I have your pen’ she asked as I stood, just a few inches away from the door.

‘Here’s it is, now fill it up quickly’ suddenly someone offered, even before my hands could retrieve it from the pocket.

One quick glance and she was engrossed in the form leaving me to endure the ‘5’ longest, reluctant steps out of the door.
